MARCH/APRIL ISSUE

Dear Austrians,
Dear Friends of Austria,

“Whoever wants to know something about me … ought to look carefully at my pictures.” With this quote by Gustav Klimt, I invite you to celebrate with us the 150th birthday of this outstanding pioneer of creativity and leading figure of fin-de siècle Vienna.

Throughout 2012, Vienna honors Gustav Klimt with special exhibitions on his life, work and the Jugendstil movement. The following link guides you through the “Gustav Klimt Year” in Vienna and the special programs presented by Austria’s world famous Museums.

On the occasion of the Klimt year, Vienna’s Albertina and Los Angeles’ Getty Museum have forged their closest cooperation ever. The exhibition of drawings entitled “Gustav Klimt: The Magic of Line” is co-curated by Lee Hendrix from the Getty Museum and Marian Bisanz-Prakken form the Albertina and will be shown from July 2 to September 23 at the Getty Museum.

In celebration of Gustav Klimt’s 150th birthday and his famous “Beethoven Frieze”, the LA Phil and Getty Museum join together to commission video imagery to accompany the “Ode to Joy” finale of the symphony. The performance will take place on July 10 at the Hollywood Bowl's opening night of its classical series.

Austrian footprints in the Contemporary Music of Los Angeles

It will premiere on April 12, at 7:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica. Music by Stephen Hartke, Andrew Norman, Igor Stravinsky, Hugh Levick and Gernot Wolfgang. Furthermore, Gernot Wolfgang also just finished an arrangement for three tenor saxophones, bass and drums of his jazz composition "Rocket" for Austrian saxophonist Harry Sokal - a founding member of the Vienna Art Orchestra - and his new ensemble “Free Tenors”. The group will tour Europe this spring. Parma Recordings will release two albums on their Navona label this summer, which contain his chamber music pieces.
